Grave marker for Ernest Greenwald in Plot N, Site 4684 of
the Brig. Gen. William. C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown
(Burlington county), New Jersey. Ernest enlisted
at the Army at Fort Preble, Portland, ME on 8 February 1941. On 22
June 1941 with his place of residence listed as Roxbury, MA he married
Louisa Silverman in Portland, ME.
Ernest
had earlier immigrated from his birthplace of Essen
(Nordrhein-Westfalen), Germany and and was naturalized as a U.S. citizen
at the U.S, District Court, Boston, MA on 11 May 1942. Again his place
of esidence was listed as Roxbury, MA.
T/3 Greenwald was attached to Hq Hq, 508th PIR from
82d Airborne Division, Leicester England on 26 August 1944 in an unknown
capacity.
T3 Greenwald was awarded the Good Conduct Medal under
508th PIR General Order 13 on 4 April 1945. That same year he was
also awarded the Bronze Star Medal under 82nd Airborne Division General
Order #118 in 1945.
Ernest re-enlisted in 1946 and 1949. He served
in Korea where he apparently earned the Silver Star. He was
discharged in 1955 with the rank of Sergeant First Class.
