| William "Widdie" Griffis, 83, of Van, W.Va., died Jan. 15, 2004, at Pine 
		Lodge Nursing Home, Beckley, W.Va.
 
 He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Sally Griffis; and his 
		wife, Bertha Griffis.
 
 He was a retired coal miner of Y and O Coal with 25 years of service and 
		a Methodist Minister for 15 years. He was a World War II Army Veteran of 
		the 508 Paratroop Division, where he was a recipient of the Purple Heart 
		award. He was a member of VFW, UMWA, O'Dell Masonic Lodge, Scottish 
		Rites, and Beni Kedem Temple Shrine. He received his certificate for his 
		Doctor of Divinity Degree from Duke University.
 
 Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Lionel and Floral Griffis of 
		Reston, Va.; one granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren.
 
 Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, at Handley Funeral Home, 
		Danville, W.Va., with the Rev. Billy Cornell officiating. Burial will 
		follow in Memory Gardens, Madison, W.Va., with military graveside rites 
		performed by Daniel Boone Post 5578, Madison.
 Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Handley 
		Funeral Home, Danville.
