DAIL M. HAGMES

(Death Certificate)

Grave marker of Pfc Dail M. Hagmes at Section 43 Site 15711 in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Saint Louis (St. Louis County), Missouri.

Although the inscription indicates Hagmes was a member of the 542nd PIR, he had been earlier assigned to the 508th, perhaps as late as July 1945 since he was awarded a Good Conduct Medal in 508th General Order #29, dated 11 July 1945.

His grave marker indicates that Dail died on 9 November 1945 but his death certificate indicates that his death was the result of an automobile accident which occurred on November 10th, a day later.  He expired as the result of subdural hemorrhage of the brain as well as contusion and hemorrhage of the left lung suffered in an accident which took place on Highway #30 near High Ridge, Missouri, a rural area SSW of St. Louis.

The error in the dating of his grave marker may have resulted from the fact that the death certificate initially showed a handwritten date of November 9th but the "nine" was written over with a '"0" and preceded by a "one", apparently correcting an incorrect entry

He was buried in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery on November 13th.
