TROY L. HAM

Troy Lee Ham, Sr., age 76, of 88 Morris Avenue, Danville, VA died August 2, 2012 of a heart attack in Duke University Medical Center. He had been in critical health since July 28.
   Born February 16, 1936 in Danville, VA, he was the son of the late Arthur and Minnie Ham. He was a 1954 graduate of George Washington High School.
   In 1955, he joined the United States Army and was a paratrooper. While in the army, Mr. Ham became a weapons expert instructor, an expert rifleman sniper, and then a fire team leader.
   After his discharge from the army, he went to work with the Danville Fire Department on the fire-police unit. After working several years, he then went full time with the Danville Police Department. While on the department, the first Firearms Police Academy was formed in Danville, of which he was the first firearms instructor and won several awards. He also helped to form the swat team in the department. His friends called him "the killer".
   He had a lifelong love of the outdoors, and his favorite activities included hunting and fishing with his son Lee.
   Mr. Ham had attended the Church Of The Brethren and was of the Christian faith.
  Survivors include his wife: Frances R. Scearce Ham; one son: Troy Lee Ham, Jr.; one daughter: Brenda Hodges. He is also survived by four grandchildren.
   Funeral services officiated by Rev. L. Allen Roberson will be held Sunday, August 5, 2012 at 2 p.m. in the Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel.  Interment, with graveside military rites by the American Legion Post 1097 Honor Guard, will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.
