Copy enlisted in the Army on 8 March 1943 and served in Company H, 508th during WWII. 

Pvt Hamel was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge for action during Normandy, France Campaign, 6 June 1944 to 9 July 1944

He was discharged on 10 December 1945.
