Grave maker for George A. Hamman in Lot 9, Range 8,
Section D-2, Grave 7, Union Dale Cemetery, Pittsburgh (Allegheny
county), Pennsylvania.
George registered for
the draft in Baden, PA on 17 October 1940 and was inducted into the
Army at Pittsburgh, PA on 27 February 1942.
Pvt Hamman was
transferred from the 507th PIR to Co C, 508th PIR on 16 October 1942
as a member of the cadre team. On 5 Novbembe3 1942 he was
promoted to Temporary Corporal.
Om 6 June 1944 Pvt
Hamman was listed as missing in action and was later determined to
have been taken prisoner. Fellow 508er Brody Hand later stated that
George had escaped from a POW camp that they both were in..
George was promoted to
Pfc on 21 January 1945
George submitted this
application for the Pennsylvania WWII Veterans Bonus on 17 May 1949.
He was credited with 56 months off domestic duty. While there
was no mention of his months overseas it was enough to net him the
full $500 bonus award. |
