JAMES E. HAMMONDS

James E. Hammonds

   James E,. (Big Boy) Hammonds, 53, died early Thursday morning. He lived on Shannon Route 1 and was a veteran World War II and a retired farmer.
   The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. in Bethel Baptist Church. Military rites will be conducted in the Family cemetery.
  . Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Vonnie M. Hammonds daughters, Misses Lora Kay, Dora Mae and Theresa Gail of the home; his sons, Jerry Hammonds of Chicago, and James E. Jr., Robbie Neil, Bradley Dale, Garry Edwin, Anthony and Jakie Hammonds of the home; his mother, Ora Hammonds of Red Springs Route 4; his sisters, Mrs. Madgalene Chavis of Lumberton, Mrs. Vera Lee Bell of Shannon, Mrs. Elsie North of Tampa, Fla., and Mrs. Eurietta Squggins of Chicago; brothers, Hardy Lee of Red Springs, James T. of Baltimore, Earl of Norfolk, and Ertle Hammonds of St. Pauls.

Grave maker for James E. Hammonds  in McNeill Cemetery, Saint Pauls (Robeson county), North Carolina.

James, a Native American, registered for the draft in St. Pauls, NC on 16 February 1942.

He enlisted at Fort Bragg, NC on 19 November 1942 and was assigned to Service Co, 508th PIR.

Pvt Hammonds was promoted to Pfc on 14 January 1945.

He was transferred from Service Co to Co G on 19 March 1945.

 Pfc Hammonds was discharged on 24 December 1945.

James died of heart disease on 25 January 1974 in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Fayetteville, NC.
