HERMAN E. HAMPTON

Grave marker for Herman E. Hampton in Forest Lawn Cemetery and Mausoleum, Richmond, (Henrico county), VA.

Herman enlisted in the Army at Richmond, VA on 1 April 1941.  His arrival in the 508th is not recorded in avaivable Moring Reports but he does appear in an Unnumbered Memo issued by Service Company on 14 July 1944 recording his transfer to Company A.

His discharge document details that he sailed to the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre on 8 April 1941, returning on 4 May 1943.  The document also states that he was in the campaign "Island of Oahu", i.e. during invasion of Pearl Harbor on Oahu.

Following a brief period in the U.S., perhaps attending jump school which the discharge states was four weeks in duration but with no date indicated, he then set sail for the ETO on 30 May 1944, arriving on 6 June 1944.

He was wounded in action on 2 October 1944 in Germany* and evacuated to a field hospital.

On 12 May 1945, he was discharged with certificate of disability, by the separation center at Ashford General Hospital, Greenbriar, WV

*Pvt Hampton was a member of the Lt. Rex Combs stick that was dropped across the border near Wyler, Germany rather than on DZ T, in Holland..
