Rites Are Set
Services for Nick E. Hanian, 44, of 704 Hoffman ave, a truck driver for the city of Des Moines, will be at 9 a. m. Saturday at All Saints Catholic Church.
Burial will he in Glendale Cemetery.
Mr. Hanian. a lifelong Des Moines resident, died of a heart attack Wednesday at the city parks department garage, 528 S W. Sixth st He was a
graduate of Dowling High School and a member of Teamsters Union Local 90 and the Des Moines Municipal
Employees Union
The rosary will be said al 7 30 p ni Friday al the Caldwell Brien Funeral Home.
Surviving are his widow, Mary W ; two daughters. Mary Kay. 6. and Elizabeth Ann. 2; his mother, Mrs. Julia Cowman of
Des Moines; four brothers, Con of New York City. James E and Thomas of Des Moines
and Dan of Scottsdale; and a sister Mrs. Vickie Hums of Miami, Fla.

Nick enlisted in the
National Guard on 1 April 19789 and served in the 113th Cavalry
Infantry. He went into active duty at Des Moines, IA on 13 January 1942
and following jump school served with the 541st PIR.
Pvt Hanian was transferred
to Hq Hq 508th PIR from Hq Field Force Replacement Depot #8 on 31 March
1944.
He was promoted to Pfc on
19 February 1945.
His military decorations
include the Bronze Star Arrowhead device awarded for participation in
the Normandy assault. This was apparently earned while serving
with the 541st PIR but awarded after a records review by the 508th.
On 281 May 1945, Pfc
Hanian was transferred to the Hq XVIII Corps (Airborne) and from there
he was apparently sent to the 513th PIR which was a subordinate unit.
He was discharged through the 513th on 21 September 1945.
Nick submitted this
application for the Iowa WWII Veterans Bonus on 17 May 1949. He
was credited with 56 months of domestic duty, apparently not even
bothering with his foreign service, and awarded the full $500 bonus.
