STEPHEN M. HANSON

   Dr. Stephen Martin Hanson, 86, of Asheville, NC, died Friday, November 19, 2010 at John F. Keever Jr. Solace Center following a short illness.
   Born August 18, 1924 in Los Angeles, CA to Wilbur Jack Hanson and Esther Roberts Hanson, he attended Sparta High School, Wabash College, Ohio State University and graduated from Marquette University School of Medicine in 1948.
   He was married to Dr. Teresa Sanchez, Sue Roberts and currently to Norma Halmagyi Hanson.
   Dr. Hanson served in the U.S. Army until 1953, attaining the rank of Captain. He was a member of the army airborne during the Korean War serving as medical officer in the 11th Airborne and as surgeon in the 508th Airborne Regimental Combat Team.
   During his life, Dr. Hanson lived in Sparta, WI, Coatesville, PA, Kennett Square, PA and Hockessin, DE before moving to Asheville, NC in 2004. He worked at Coatesville Hospital as Chief of Pathology and as Chief of Laboratory Services at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Elsmere, DE for 25 years until retiring in 1996.
   Stephen was a member or the Hot Dog Club which began in Sparta, WI with friends in the sixth grade, including Bill Richardson of Givens, and has continued as a close group until the present time. His best memories were of times fishing in the lakes near the Canadian border. He also enjoyed planting trees to beautify yards and church yards, including the one in which he will be interred. He included among his accomplishments his interest in medical policies including being President of the Delaware Pathology Society, President of the Chester PA Medical Society, Chairman of the Pennsylvania Dept. of Health Advisory Committee on Lab Procedures, Secretary of PA Assoc. of Clinical Pathologists, Chairman of the Pennsylvania Medical Society Commission of Forensic Medicine and the College of American Pathologists House of Delegates. He was active in the vestries of Christ Episcopal Church, Delaware City and St. James Episcopal Church, Downingtown, PA.
   He is survived by his wife, Norma, of Asheville, NC and children, Christopher Hanson of North Brunswick, NJ, Jeannette Jones of Cumberland, RI and Michael Hanson of Pittsburgh, PA; stepchildren, including Ellen Filer of Atlanta, GA, Jessica Hedge of Charlotte, NC, Andrea Hill of Raleigh, NC and Anthony Davis of Clearwater, FL.
   Stephen was preceded in death by former wives, Teresa Sanchez and Sue Roberts, as well as one sister, Connie Kay of Missoula, MT.
   A memorial service will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, November 23, at the Norma J. Pulliam Memorial Chapel at Givens Estates, 2360 Sweeten Creek Road, Asheville, NC 28803. Interment will be at Christ Church Christiana Hundred, Greenville, DE at a later date.
   Visitation will be held at Christ Church one hour prior to the interment. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choosing.
