Charles registered for the
draft ca. 1940 and enlisted in the Army at enlisted at New Cumberland,
PA on 18 February 1942. [Note that the record has a handwritten
update in the top margin stating he had bee discharged on 7 November
1945.]
While home on leave, he
married Grace E. Witmer [1918–2006] in Pottsville (Schuylkill), PA.
T5 Hartman was transferred
from the 17th Airborne Division to Company G, 508th PIR on 21 August
1945.
He was discharged on 7
November 1945 at the Indiantown Gap Military Reservation, PA.
On
2 February 1950, Charles submitted this Pennsylvania
WWII Veterans Bonus application.
He was credited with 22 months of domestic duty and 23
months of foreign service. He was awarded a full bonus of $500.
