JOSEPH C. HELVERSON

JOSEPH C. HELVERSON, 67, 4438 Red Oak Lane, Zellwood, died Monday. Born in Evansville, Ind., he moved to Zellwood from Birmingham, Ala., in 1987. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Church of Christ. He was a Mason, a member of Knights of Templar and Royal Arch Mason, all of Paducah, Ky. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans and was a Kentucky Colonel. Survivors: wife, Barbara M.; sister, Dorothy Baker, Elizabethtown, Ky. Rehbaum-Harden Funeral Home, Mount Dora.

NOTE: the reference to Joseph being a Navy veteran is inaccurate unle3ss he switched branches of service after the war ended. He enlisted in the Army in 1`940 and was a member of Company H, 508th PIR.

Grave marker for Joseph C. Helverson in McDaniel Cemetery, Jonesboro (Craighead county), Arkansas.

Joseph enlisted in the Army at Fort Benjamin Harrison, IN on 4 July 1940.

Sgt Helverson was transferred from the 10th Replacement Depot to Service Company 508th PIR on 14 September 1944.

On 3 October 1944 he was reduced to the grade of Private "without prejudice."

On 24 December 1945 Pfc Helverson was hospitalized and class as a non-combat" injury, perhaps due to frostbite. 

Still attached to the 5087th, Pvt Helverson was promoted to Pfc on 31 January 1945.

On 10 May 1945 he was transferred to the hospital's Detachment of Patients.  He did not return to the regiment.
