Donald enlisted in the Army at Camp Dodge, Herrold, IA on 16 August 1943,

Pvt Herbst was initially assigned to the 332nd Infantry, 42nd Rainbow Division but volunteered for parachutist duty.

Following jump school he joined with Company A, 508th PIR in late summer 1944.

Pfc Herbst was wounded in action on 18 September 1944 and was awarded the
Purple Heart.

He was discharged on 22 December 1945.
