Heart Attack Fatal to Resident
Well Known In Community
A great loss to family, community and
friends occurred when E. Gordon Heslep 48, RDS1, Coudersport, died
suddenly of a heart attack at St. Joseph's Hospital in Cheektowaga, NY.,
Thursday, (Oct. 10, 1968)
Mr. Heslep was in Buffalo to receive an award for serving 20 years
in the Tennessee Gas Pipeline Co.
He was born March 20, 1920 in Arlington, Texas, the son of Norman
G. and Lady L. Davis Heslep. He married the former Steina
Gunnarsdottir of Iceland, Sept 18. 1945 in Houston, Texas. Prior
to living in the last 15 years in Coudersport, the Hesleps resided in
Winfield, NY. He was district account for Tennessee Gas Pipeline
Co.
Mr. Heslep was a WWII veterans, a staff sergeant in the
paratroopers. He was a member of Roulette Wheels,
Otsega [Masonic] Lodge # 133 F & AM, Cooperstown, NY; Coudersport Royal
Arch Chapter #263; Coudersport Council #63; a member of Generalissimo of
potter Commandery #69; Coudersport Scottish Rite Bodies and attended
Park United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Steina Heslep; three children, Mrs.
Stephen (Sandra Lee) Walaski, san Diego, Ca.; Edgar Gordon Heslep and
Norma Gudney Heslep, both at home; two brothers, William N. Heslep of
Australia and Dr. Robert D. Heslep of Athens, Ga.
The funeral service was held in Park United Methodist Church,
Saturday, Oct 12, with the Rev. LaRue Bender, pastor, officiating.
Interment was in Woodland Cemetery, Coudersport.
A Masonic memorial service was held Friday evening at 7:00 at the
Grabe-Fickinger Funeral Home by members of Eulalia Lodge #342, F & AM.
Pallbearers were Charles Overton, Walter Krysevig, Marvin Balfour,
Edward Christie, Edwin Metzger, Lawrence Gardner, Marvin Roudebush and
Peter Gardner.

Edgar enlisted in the Army
at Fort Sill, OK on 7 September 1940.
On 8 September, 1944 Pvt
Heslep was transferred from Hq 82nd Airborne Division, Leicester,
England to Service Company, 508th PIR. He was transferred to
Company 8 on 12 December 1944 and went into combat in the Battle of the
Bulge when the regiment was sent forward 6 days later.
On 26 December 1944, Pvt
Heslep was evacuated to a field hospital and as a "Non-Battle Casualty"
which may indicate that he was a victim of frostbite.
He returned to duty on 24
February 1945.
His military decorations
include the Combat Infantryman Badge awarded for action during the
campaign, 18 December 1944 to 20 February 1945. |
