Grave marker for Eugene C. Hetland at Entrance Gate 1, Garden of Commemoration, Section 16, Lot 2674, Grave 2, Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier (Los Angeles county), California.

Eugene, a native of South Dakota, attended the University of South Dakota.  In 1936, as a Freshman, he was pledged to Delta Tau Delta fraternity and two years later, then a Junior, he had become the fraternity president.

Hetland CommissionedArgus-Leader, Sioux Falls, SD, Monday, June 6, 1938, Page 2] Although the yearbook entry, above, indicated that he was a Junior in 1938, this article reported that he was one of five men from Sioux Falls who had been commissioned as Second Lieutenants. The newly anointed ROTC grads were to be reporting to the 356th Infantry Reserve, which at that time had its Headquarters at Sioux Falls, SD.

However, on 22 February 1942 , the 356th was relieved from assignment to the 89th Division; withdrawn from the Organized Reserves and allotted to the Army of the United States as an inactive unit.  Lt Hetland, by then graduated from college,  was transferred from the Reserve unit to Camp Roberts, CA and inducted into the Army as a reserve lieutenant.  He was placed in an infantry training battalion.

2nd Lt Hetland was transferred to Company D on 23 October 1942.  His point of origin was not recorded but considering the interval between this event and the Camp Roberts training assignment, he must have been a parachutist volunteer and completed jump school.  His transfer may have been directly from the parachute school at Fort Benning, GA.

Following a promotion to 1st Lt, he served in Hq Hq as Special Services Officer during the second half of March 1943 and again during the first half of May 1943.

On 18 June 1943 he was transferred from Company D to Company E where he served as the executive officer until 25 April 10944 when he assumed the role of company commander.

On 26 July 1944 he was transferred to Service Company in the role of 1st Battalion Supply Officer.

His military decorations include the Bronze Service Arrowhead device awarded for participation in the Normandy assault,
