Orrick C. Hewey, born in
Maine in 1919, enlisted in the Army on 28 November 1939. At some
point he became parachute qualified and was transferred from the 82nd
Airborne Division to the 508th PIR on 23 July 1944 while the regiment
was just rotating back from its combat tour in Normandy.
Regimental records for
Orrick are sparse although we know that he was served in both Hq 1t and
Service Company and was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge for the
Holland Campaign.
Whether he suffered a
combat or non-combat related injury is unknown but he was amongst a
sizeable number of patients listed on the SS Santa Rosa which departed
on 14 June 1945 from Southampton, England and arrived in New York City
on 21 Jun 1945. His injury is listed as "F" which may signify a
foot problem or a fracture although in either instance the site should
have been described and was not.
Orrick died on 10 April
1983 in Longview (Cowlitz), Washington at the age of 63. |
