FOUR ENLIST IN ARMY FOR DURATION
During the past few days the following .named men have been
accepted for enlistment in the United States Army by the local Army

Lieut. Hewitt
Wilbur D. Hewitt, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. T. Hewitt of Dixonville has been commissioned a second lieutenant in the Officer Candidate Course at the Infantry School, Fort Benning, Ga.
He was a graduate of Green Township High School and enlisted March 4, 1942 and served with the 504th Parachute Infantry.

Wilbur
registered for the draft ca. 1941 and was inducted
into
the Army on 4 March 1942.
He was commissioned as a
2nd Lt on 3 May 1943 and was transferred from Fort Benning, GA to
Service Company, 508h PIR.
On 16 November 1943 2nd Lt
Hewitt was transferred to the 541st PIR.
On 18 February 1950,
Wilbur submitted this application for the Pennsylvania WWI\I Veterans
Bonus. He was credited with 25 months of domestic duty and 23
months of foreign service Note that he stated that he was
still in the service (page 1, item 10)
Wilbur was discharged,
presumably as an officer, at Fort Knox, KY on 1 March 1946 he
re-enlisted as a MSgt on 12 March 1946 in Pittsburg.
His grave marker indicated
that he had been in the Air Force. On September 19 1947, when the
Air Force was established as a separate branch of service, many men
opted to transfer out of the army and join the Air Force. |
