Peter registered for the draft in his hometown of Norlina
(Warren), NC on 30 June 1942 and was inducted into the Army on 16
October 1942. Pvt Hilliard was transferred from
the Reception Center, Fort Bragg, to Company A, 508th PIR on 23
October 1942. He was subsequently transferred from Company A to
Hq Co 1st Battalion on 27 December 1942. Pfc
Hilliard was wounded in action in Normandy, Frances on 2 July 1944.
On 27 March 1945 he was hospitalized at the 241st General
Hospital, Camp Sissonne, France and classed as a non-barttle casualty.
He returned to duty on 22 May 1945. He was
discharged on 7 November 1945 and then re-enlisted at Pope Field, Fort
Bragg, NC on 29 November 1946. Sometime on, or
after, 18 September 1947 he transferred from the Army to the newly
formed U.S. Air Force. He was discharged as a Staff Sergeant
on 31 May 1967. Peter's military decorations
include the Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman Badge, awarded for action
during the Normandy, France Campaign and the Bronze Service Arrowhead
device awarded for Holland campaign and Airborne operations. |
