ROBERT T. HOBBS

Grave marker for Robert T. Hobbs in Section 5 Site 1578 of the Wilmington National Cemetery, Wilmington (New Hanover county), North Carolina.

Robert enlisted in the Army from the National Guard at Wilmington, NC on 16 Sept 1940. was designated for the Medical Corps.

Pvt Hobbs was initially assigned to the 507th PIR and was one of the first 327 officers and men to be transferred to the 508th as cadre.

He rose in rank quickly and by July 1943 was a Staff Sergeant, a rank which he held through WWII.

SSgt Hobbs was a member of Chalk 4, a stick under command of Capt.. George Simonds for the invasion of Normandy.

He was wounded in action on 1 February 1945 in Belgium and was awarded the Purple Heart.  He was also awarded the Bronze Service Arrowhead for participation in Normandy assault and the Good Conduct Medal.  Presumably he received the Combat Medical Badge as well.

In subsequent service during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam he achieved the rank of Master Sergeant.
