Charles 'Chuck Holmes
BICKNELL Charles "Chuck" Holmes, 76, 204 Elm Lane, Vincennes, died at 11:23 p.m. Wednesday at the Good Samaritan Hospital.
He was born Oct. 3, 1919, in West Port, Miss., the son of Lyle and Fern (Hollingsworth) Holmes.
Holmes graduated from Bicknell High School in 1938 and was a quarterback on the football team. He also played basketball and ran track. He served in the Army during World War II in Europe and received a battlefield commission, five Purple Hearts, and a Bronze Medal. He was discharged as a first lieutenant. He was a former resident of Bicknell and had lived in Vincennes since 1950. In 1976 he retired as bulk plant manager with Standard Oil Company. Holmes was a member of the Vincennes First United Methodist Church, Bicknell Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Hadi Shrine, both of Evansville, and the Harmony Society and the Elks of Vincennes.
Surviving are his wife, Joy (Wampler) Holmes, whom he married Feb. 14, 1948; a daughter, MarvaLee Tresslar of Vincennes; a sister, Barbara Waggoner of Little Rock, Ark.; and a granddaughter.
Two brothers and a sister are deceased.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the McClure Funeral Home with the Rev. R.
Michael Reed officiating.
Burial will be in the Bicknell Memorial Cemetery where military rites will be conducted by the Vincennes American Legion. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday.

2nd Lt. Holmes was transferred from the 509th PIR to Co
D, 508th PIR on 3 February 1945.
Lt Holmes was wounded in action on 10 February 1945.
He was sent on Detached Service with the 9th Troop
Carrier Command Pathfinder School on 16 March 1945 and returned to the
company on 9 April.
2nd Lt Holmes was reassigned to Reception Station #6,
Camp Atterbury on 15 May 1945.
He married Joy Wampler on Valentines Day, 14 February
1948.
Charles
died of various lung complications on 13 December 1995. |
