Of Liberated Soldier Gladdens Daytonian's Easter
Easter time, for the second year, is a time of gladness for Mrs.
Glenn Fourman of 1339 Arbor av. Last year, during the Easter
season, her son, Staff Sgt Norman Hook, completed his overseas service
and returned to the states. And this season she received a War
department telegram that ended nine months of anxiety for another son,
corp. Kenneth Hook, Stalag 3-C who was recently liberated from the
German prison camp near Altdrewitz.
"When the wire came Thursday night, I just didn't know if it was
real or not," Mrs. Fourman smiled. Kenneth was captured on June 6
and it wasn't until November that I had any word from him. Then
letters came in a week apart, or two weeks apart until February,
and then they suddenly stopped.
"I was plenty worried then, but I still had hope for his
liberation," she continued. "And now that I know he's been released, I
feel as though a weight has been lifted. I know he's all right."
Kenneth entered service in November, 1942, and went overseas with
the 508th infantry in January, 1944. His brother, Norman, now is based
with the air force in Columbus, and another brother, Pfc. Russell Hook,
is with the infantry in France.
"Now, for a complete Easter next year, I hope only that all the
boys are home by then,"
