PHILIP C. HOPSON


Philip C. Hopson, 70, of Northampton and formerly of Pittsfield, a decorated combat veteran of World War II, died on Thursday at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Leeds, Northampton.

He was head auditor at Chrysler Motor Corp. in Tappan Zee, N.Y., for 11 years, and retired in 1972.

Born in Rochester, N.Y., he attended local schools and was a graduate of the University of Rochester.

He lived for 18 years in Westfield, and moved to Pittsfield 17 years ago.

During World War II, he served in the 351st Infantry Regiment of the 88th Infantry Division. The division fought in the Rome-Arno, North Apennines and Po Valley campaigns in Italy in 1943-45. Hopson rose to the rank of master sergeant, and was awarded a Silver Star, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and the New York Medal of Commendation. He qualified as a paratrooper.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 448, Disabled American Veterans Post 15, American Legion Post 68, and Itam Lodge 75. He was also a member of the Christian Assembly Church.

He leaves two sons, David B. of Blandford and Glenn W. of Greenfield; two brothers, Charles R. of Churchville, N.Y., and Robert D. of Hamling, N.Y.; a sister, Chloe Carmer of Churchville, and three grandchildren.

Calling hours are Sunday afternoon at Devanny Condron Funeral Home, followed by a funeral service. Burial will follow at the convenience of the family at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Memorial contributions may be made to DAV Post 15, in care of the funeral home.
