IVAN R. ILER
LTC Ivan Iler

COLUMBIA --- graveside service for LTC Ivan "Ike" Roy Iler, U.S. Army (Ret), will be held in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Prunedale, CA.  Dunbar Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements and Struve and LaPorte Funeral Home, Salinas CA is in charge of arrangements in Prunedale, CA.
   Mr. Iler died December 9, 1999.  Bo4rn in Osceola, NE, he retired after twenty years in the US Army.  He served during WWII, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War and was awarded the Legion of Merit and other military awards.  Mr. Iler was an avid golfer.
   Surviving are his wife Mary Potts "Libby" Iler of Columbia;  Sons, David Iler of Salinas, CA and Jeffrey Iler of Columbus, NE; daughter Peggy Dunne of San Mateo, CA; step-son Ed Stoutenborough of Monterey, CA; step-daughter Kathy Stoutenborough of San Diego, CA; brother John Iler of Aberdeen, SD; sister Ilena; and grandsons Dustin Iler and Corey Iler

Pvt Iler was transferred from Hq 82nd Airborne Division to Service Company,508th PIR on 3 October 1944.  He was then transferred to Hq 3rd on 21 November 1944.

Pfc Iler was awarded the Combat Infantryman badge for action during the Ardennes campaign, 18 Dec 1944 to 20 Feb 1945.

Ivan was commissioned as a second lieutenant on 4 January 1952.  On 12 December 1956, 1st Lt Iler deplaned with his family from a charter MATS flight flown by Slick Airways from Tokyo to Travis AFB, CA.  Included was his wife Phyllis and four children aged from 6 years to 4 months.  This trip may have marked the end of his service in the Korean Conflict. He later served in Vietnam as well.

Ivan and Phyllis divorced in 1979 and Ivan married again in 1981 to Mary E. Potts.
