WILLIAM H. IRBY

[courtesy of Sheridan Smith)
Death certificate and grave marker for William H. Irby in Fern Oaks Cemetery, Griffith (Lake county), Indiana.

It is not known when William first joined with the 508th PIR.  However on 22 November 1943 there is record of him in Hq 2nd Morning Reports when he returned from furlough.

Pfc Irby was promoted to T/5 on 17 August 1944.

On 9 January 1945 T/5 Irby was evacuated to a field hospital and was listed as a non-battle casualty, perhaps due to frostbite. He returned to duty on 8 April 1945,

His military decorations include the Bronze Service Arrowhead device awarded for participation in Normandy assault.
