VANCE VELTON JENKINS

Grave marker for Vance Velton Jenkins in the Cleveland Memorial Park, Shelby (Cleveland County), North Carolina.

Vance was a member of the Cadre team that transferred to the 508th as a core group in 1942.

He was also a member of the G. I. Talent Show in Frankfurt which presented the play "Three Nights In Charlie's”, a musical comedy staffed by 508th soldier talent

CONWAY - Vance Velton Jenkins, age 85, of Four Mile Road, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006 at Conway Medical Center.

Mr. Jenkins was born in Lawndale, N.C., a son of the late Tom and Flossie Dixon Jenkins. Mr. Jenkins was a U.S. Army Veteran during WWII serving as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division Landing on D-Day and suffering frozen feet in the Battle of the Buldge. He participated in 32 jumps and three during combat and was awarded a purple heart, E.A.M.E. ribbon with three bronze service stars and a combat infrantry badge. His unit was awarded the Presidential Citation with Oak Leaf Cluster.

Mr. Jenkins retired as an electrician for Hudson Hosiery Mills in Shelby, N.C. with 26 years of service. He was a member of Masonic Lodge # 201 AFM in Cleveland County, N.C. for over 50 years and also a member and former deacon of Eastside Baptist Church in Shelby, N.C. Mr. Jenkins is a member of Langston Baptist Church in Conway. He was preceeded in death by a son, Robert Lee Jenkins and eight siblings.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Thelma Beatrice McMurry Jenkins; two daughters, Judy J. Davis and her husband, Robert, of Charlotte, N.C., Jeanne J. Hill and her husband, Rick, of Conway; four grandchildren, Jennifer Fauser and her husband, Robert, Jonathan Davis and his wife, Leann, Matt Hill and his wife, Kyndra, all of Charlotte, N.C. and Daniel Hill of Conway; two great-grandchildren, Reagan Fauser, Jackson Hill; a sister, Ruby Jenkins of Fallston, N.C. and a brother-in-law, James McMurry and his wife, Christine of Polkville, N.C.

Memorial services will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, at Langston Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. M. Randall Jones and the Rev. Darrell Smith officiating.

A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Cleveland Memorial Park in Boiling Springs, N.C. with military honors.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel.
