KENNETH L. JOHNSON


WILLIAMSBURG - Retired Army Maj. Gen. Kenneth L. Johnson, 71, died Friday, Sept. 21, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

A native of Portland, Ore., Mr. Johnson was a member of St. Bede Catholic Church. He also was a member of the Middle Plantation Club (Emeritus) and the Pulaski Club, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus.

He was a member of the Army Infantry for 33 years and was a veteran of World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam wars. He received the Distinguished Service Metal, the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit with four oak leaf clusters, the Bronze Star Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Purple Heart, the Belgium Fourragére, the Netherland Military Order of William of Orange, the Netherland Orange Lanyard, the Combat Infantryman's Badge and the Master Parachutist Badge.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte K. Johnson; one son, Michael Johnson of Roanoke; one brother, Robert Johnson of Edina, Minn.; and two grandchildren.

A mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Bede Catholic Church. Burial with military honors will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Arlington National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends tonight in Bucktrout Funeral Home at 7. A wake will be held at 7:30.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the St. Bede Catholic Church building fund, 601 College Terrace, Williamsburg 23185; or to the James City County Fire and Rescue, 5077 John Tyler Highway, Williamsburg 23185.

He served as both a Lieutenant and a Captain during WW-II in Service Company and was wounded in Normandy.

Johnson was killed in an accident on August 21, 1990 when his car battery exploded in his face at his home in Williamsburg, VA
