DONALD M. JOHNSTON

Donald M. Johnston, age 88, formerly of 240 Woodland Drive, Wisconsin Rapids, died Sunday, July 8, 2012 at Arborwood Lodge in Wisconsin Rapids.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM. Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at the First Congregational Church-UCC in Wisconsin Rapids. Pastor Paul Veldman will officiate. Burial will take place in Wisconsin Veteran's Cemetery in King, WI. Military rites will be provided by VFW Post #2534 of Wisconsin Rapids. (Please note there will be no visitation time held prior to services at the church on Wednesday).

Donald was born May 21, 1924 in Providence, Rhode Island to the late Berttram and Zella (MacDuff) Johnston. He married Barbara Mitchell on July 13, 1952 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was employed as a salesman for Link Belt Corporation in Boston, MA and Milwaukee, WI to 25 years. He then went to work for Badger Bearing in Milwaukee, before opening his own business Don Johnston, Inc. in Wisconsin Rapids, retiring in 1984.

He was an avid championship golfer, enjoyed hunting, woodworking, cooking and loved to work in his yard.

Donald is survived by his wife, Barbara, son, Brian MacDuff Johnston of Pewaukee, daughter, Lynn (Dan) Kirkbride of Chugwater, WY, grandchildren, Hannah (Thomas) Kraner, Jeremy (Tara) Westerman, Abby (Ben) Kirkbride, Mitchell Westerman, Charles MacDuff Westerman and 1 great-grandchild, Beck William Westerman. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Gordon Johnston.

Donald enlisted in the Army at Boston, MA on 22 June 1943. 

Pvt Johnston was shipped overseas after completion of basic training and jump school.  On 6 April 1944 he was transferred from an 82nd Airborne Division Replacement Depot to Company A, 508th PIR.

He was awarded the Bronze Service Arrowhead device for participation in the Normandy assault.

Pfc Johnston was wounded in action on 20 September 1944 in Holland and received the Purple Heart.
