DEWEY A. JONES

(courtesy of Iris Meshell)

Grave marker for Dewey A. Jones in the Smackover Cemetery, Smackover (Union), Arkansas.

Dewey enlisted at Little Rock, AR on 9 October 1943 but did not join the 508th until he was transferred to the Service Company from the Hq 82nd AB Division Replacement Depot in  Leicester, England on 18 September 1944. The timing was poor as the rest of the regiment had left for Holland a day earlier.

Pvt Jones was reassigned to Company F on 22 November and thus was in position to go into combat fore the Battle of the Bulge.  He was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge for action during the campaign, 18 December 1944 to 20 February 1945.

Whether he was wounded or suffered frostbite is unclear but he was transferred to a hospital and later on 12 April 1945 Pvt Jones was reassigned to the Department of Patients at the unknown location implying a prolonged convalescence. He did not return to the regiment.
