Gerald E. Jones
CHAMBERSBURG Gerald E. Jones, 78, of 507 Hood St
died at 5:23 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2001, in Chambersburg Hospital.
Born
July 10, 1922, in Waynesboro, he was a son of the late John P. and Myrtle
Barbara Straub Jones. He was a Protestant.
Mr. Jones was retired with
20 years of service from TB Wood's Inc. of Chambersburg, where he
was a forklift operator. He previously retired from the U.S. Army with
21 years of service, having attained the rank of master sergeant.
During
World War II, he served in both the 82nd and 101st Airborne divisions.
He also served in the Vietnam War.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing and
was an avid fan of sprint and NASCAR racing.
He and his wife, Pauline
M. Hawbaker Jones, were married on Nov. 10, 1951. She died on May 3,
1996. Three brothers and a sister also preceded him in death.
Surviving
are three daughters, Joyce (Mrs. Larry) Black of Oreana, HI [sic].; Barbara
K. Washabaugh of Chambersburg; and Velenora J. (Mrs. Audie) Maines of
Greencastle; four sons, Carl R. (husband of Mary Grace) and Dean N.,
both of Chambersburg; Dwight E. (husband of Pat) of Frederick, Md.;
and Barry E. of Greencastle; a brother, Benjamin of Kentucky, nine grandchildren;
and four great-grandchildren.
Service will be at 11:30 8m. Friday in
Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home Inc., 333 Falling Spring Road. The Rev.
Kevin Witter will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery, where
a military service will be conducted by the Honor Guard of Charles Nitterhouse
Post 1599 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Visitation will be one hour before
the service in the funeral home.

Gerald registered for the draft in Waynesboro, PA
on 30 June 1942 and was inducted into the Army at Harrisburg, PA. on
8 November 1942.
On 11 April 1956, MSgt Jones was listed on the "Return
of 508th RCT To CONUS" advanced party movement order from Camp Chickamauga,
Japan to Camp Campbell, KY via Travis AFB, CA, with wife and 3 children.
On 27 September 1950, Gerald submitted this application
for the Pennsylvania WWII Veterans Bonus. He was credited with 6 months
of domestic duty and 29 months of foreign service which awarded him
a $495 bonus.
He re-enlisted on 18 October 1972 and was discharged
on 17 October 1965.
