Robert registered for the draft ca 1941 while a student at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA.

He entered active service at Fort Bliss, TX in June, 1943.

On 4 December 1944, Cpl Kelly was discharged to accept a commission and became a 2nd lieutenant the following day.

Lt. Kelly left for the ETO on 11 August 1945 and was assigned to the 508th PIR.  He returned to the U.S. on 2 March 1946 and was promoted to 1st Lt on 5 December 1946.

He married Eunice Musselman Clough in Seaford (Sussex county), DE on 27 November 1949.

 

On 20 March 1950, Robert submitted this application for the Pennsylvania WWII veterans Bonus.  At that time he was in Company K, 511th Airborne Infantry regiment at Camp Campbell, TN.  He listed his initial enlisted ASN followed by his Reserve and Regular Army officer ASNs and indicated he had no break in service following the war.
