WALTER J. KERN, Jr.

Walter J. Kern Jr., 79, a lifetime resident of Monroeville, died on June 4, 2006 at the Cooper Medical Center in Camden. Kern was very passionate about several things in his life. First and foremost came his family and then his farm. Some may not know, but from 1944-49, he played for the Yankees AAA team. Very active in the community, he served as a township committeeman in Upper Pittsgrove and on the Salem County Board of Chosen Freeholders, in addition, he served on the Agway Board, Board of Agriculture, the Board of MidAtlantic Banks, the Elmer Hospital Board, the Draft Board and the Upper Pittsgrove Democrat Club.

A member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, he also served in the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army as a paratrooper.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Jeanette (nee Pancoast), his children, Cathy Kern Harris and John of Charlotte, N.C., Karen Kern Cummins and Harley of Doylestown, Pa, Jeannie Kern Love and Tim of Woodstown, Walter J. Kern III and Pam of Middletown, Del, Michael J. Kern and Lori of Chestertown, MD, Frank P. Kern, Woodstown, and Eric Kern and Tara of Monroeville.

In addition, he is survived by his sisters, Gladys LaCavera of Ocean City, N.J. and June Soscia of Columbia, Md. as well as 17 grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter Michelle.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be said on Thursday, June 8, 2006 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, 51 Broad St., Woodstown.

The viewing will be held on Wednesday, June 7, 2006 from 6-9 p.m. at the ADAMS FUNERAL HOME, 111 S. Main St., Elmer. Interment will take place at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Woodstown.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations can be made to either a charity or church of your choice or to the Elmer Maternity Unit, Front St., Elmer NJ 08318. www.adamsfuneralhome.org.
