Grave marker for John D. Kersh in the Gaston Memorial Park, Gastonia (Gaston County). North Carolina.

John enlisted in the Army on January 29, 1942 and after volunteering for parachutist duty was assigned to the 507th PIR.

Following the completion of jump school he was one of a number of men from that unit transferred to the fledgling 508th PIR as a cadre member.  He was assigned to Service Company, probably as a Rigger.

He participated in the jump into Normandy on D-Day, 6 June 1944.

SSgt Kersh's service decorations include the Bronze Service arrowhead for his participation in Normandy assault and the Combat Infantryman's Badge.
