Miller Falls Veteran, Nazi Prisoner, Dies Suddenly—
MILLERS FALLS — Robert
Kiley, 22. - youngest .son. of Timothy and the late Mabel (Merritt)
Kiley, died last night at midnight in Farren Memorial Hospital after a
short illness.
A paratrooper who was injured and reported missing overseas
after the Normandy invasion, Kiley was discharged from, the army, May
31. He had received .head and leg injuries and lost an eye but had been
under treatment in hospitals in Europe and this country previous to
discharge
Born in Millers Falls, Nov. 14, 1923, Kiley attended the local schools
and was graduated from Turners Falls high school. He entered the service
Nov 2, 1942, and trained as a paratrooper in this country. He received
his wings as a parachutist, March 5, 1943, and went to England. Kiley
entered Normandy after the invasion and was reported missing in July. He
was a German prisoner and liberated by the Allies.
He was awarded the purple heart with oak leaf clusters and the
presidential citation.
Besides his father, he leaves a sister, Mrs. Victor Ward of Orange,
three brothers, John of Miller Falls, Wilfred of Mamaroneck, NY, and
Richard of Arlington; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Friday at 3:30 at the Thompson Funeral Home.,
Bridge street followed by a high mass of requiem in St. John’s church.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Greenfield. |
