William enlisted in the Army at Ft Thomas, Newport, KY on 6 November 1942.  His cousin Eugene Klug enlisted at the same time.

Initially assigned to Co F, 508th PIR, the Klug cousins probably made a paperwork nightmare as not only were the names the same, their ASN's were just 10 digits different.  To resolve the problem, on 11 November 1943 William was transferred to Hq 2nd while cousin Earl was sent to Hq 1st.

The regiment participated in the now famous Tennessee Maneuvers in the Fall of 1943 and remarkably a glimpse at William's future was presented when on 26 September 1943 he was listed as "lost in action".  He apparently had lost his way but was able to return.

William was with Hq 2nd when the battalion jumped into Normandy on D-Day but was captured that same day.  This article appeared in the Cincinnati Enquirer on 21 July 1944.  By chance Pfc Robert Martin of Co I, 508th was listed as well.

MISSING IN FRANCE
Pvt William A. Klug Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Klug, 971 Woodlawn Ave., has been missing in France since D-Day, the War Department has advised his parents.  He was also a member of a paratroop division.

Remarkably his cousin Eugene was also taken prisoner and both would sit out the war as POW's.

A second article appeared in the Cincinnati Enquirer on 28 July 1944 and repeated much of the same information but did state specifically that he was being held by the Germans and he had sent a letter home.

William was liberated from Stalag 4A on 12 June 1945.
