Charles H. Koons, 86, entered into rest at 3:30
p.m. Monday, December 5, 2005, at York Hospital
after a brief illness. He was the husband of Ruth N. (Kauffman)
Koons to whom he was married for 58 years. The couple was
married September 21, 1947.
Mr. Koons was the assistant to the
Postmaster in Red Lion for many years and then became the
Postmaster at Wellsville, retiring 29 years ago, in 1976.
He was
a WWII Army veteran, receiving the Bronze Star for Valor and the
Purple Heart. He was a member of St. John's UCC in Red Lion; the
Red Lion American Legion Post 543; Red Lion VFW Post 1446;
Disabled American Veterans; 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment
Association; Yellow Breeches Trout Association; Muddy Creek
Forks Trout Association; Mobil Foods in Red Lion; and the Shad
Club.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Jeffrey C.
Koons of York and David H. Koons of Dallastown; three daughters,
Jane C. Koons of Cherry Hill, N.J., Denise A. Koons and husband,
Donald Small of Hanover, and Danette Koons of York; two
grandchildren, Tanya Beck and Chad Ehrhart; two
great-grandchildren, Rachel Beck and Brittany Beck; one brother,
Nevin T. Koons of Red Lion; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be held Friday from 9 to 10 a.m. at Burg Funeral
Home, Inc., 134 W. Broadway, Red Lion, followed by a 10 a.m.
service at the funeral home. His pastor, the Rev. David D.
Tietje, will officiate, assisted by Pastor Larry Riddle of
Moore's Corner Church in Levertt, Mass.
Burial will be in Red Lion Cemetery with a flag folding ceremony by
the York County Veterans Honor Guard.
Memorial contributions may be offered to St. John's UCC, 161 N.
Mains St., Red Lion, PA 17356; or to Pleasant Acres Nursing and
Rehab Center, 118 Pleasant Acres Road, York, PA 17402.

Charles enlisted in the Army on
September 10. 1940 and was assigned to the
Quartermaster Corps.. His enlistment was for the
Panama Canal Department;
However, he volunteered for
parachutist duty and following completion of jump
school he was sent overseas where he joined the
Company A, 508th sometime in either 1942 or 1943.
He participated in the jump into
Normandy on D-Day, 6 June 1944 and was wounded in action eleven days later. Charles
returned to the regiment in August and was
transferred to Service Company.
Pfc Koons' service decorations
include the Purple Heart and the Bronze Service
arrowhead for his participation in Normandy assault. |
