Memorial Service in Celebration of the Life of Major General Joe S.
Lawrie (Ret) will be held 2:00 pm Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at the
Lakeside Pavilion at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home and Memorial Park.
Joe's distinguished military service concluded with his command of the
82nd Airborne Division and retirement in San Antonio, TX. He was
preceded in death by his wife Dorothy. Surviving family members
include: daughters Lynn Jones, husband Don and family of San Antonio,
TX., Heddy King, husband Brooke and family of Ft. Worth, TX. and son
Bruce and wife JoHannah of Dallas, TX. In lieu of flowers, memorial
donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
The North Texas chapter of the 82nd
Airborne Association was present at the memorial service held in Dallas
on March 3, 2009.
MG Lawrie was a "Mustang," military
slang for an officer who started in the enlisted ranks. He served in the
Pacific theater during WWII where he distinguished himself in the
Airborne. He also was involved in the Korean and Vietnam wars. His
last command before retirement was CG of the 82nd Airborne 1965-1967.
His decorations included the Silver Star, Air Medal, Legion of Merit,
Commendation Medal, Bronze Star Medal and Master Parachutist Badge.
