Grave markers for Robert D. Leen in the Hickory Flat Cemetery, Overpeck (Butler county), Ohio.

Robert enlisted in the Army at Ft Thomas, Newport, KY on 2 December 1942 and was assigned to Company I, 508th PIR.

On 1 August 1943 Pvt Leen was transferred to the ASTP* Unit, Carnegie Institute of Technology Pittsburg, Pa.

Pvt Leen did not return to the 508th but apparently saw action as he was awarded the Purple Heart.

* - The Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP) was established to meet wartime demands both for junior officers and soldiers with technical skills. Conducted at a number of American universities, it offered training in such fields as engineering, foreign languages, and medicine.
