Lloyd registered for the draft in Kewanee, IL on 29 June 1942 and was inducted into the Army at Peoria, IL on 28 December 1942.

Based on the grave marker inscription, Lloyd served with Company D, 504th PIR but Pfc Lester appeared in the Company A group photo of newly arrived men shown in the 508th's 3rd anniversary book having apparently been transferred from his original unit.
