Grave marker for John R. Lilly and family in the Calvary Cemetery, Indianapolis (Marion county), Indiana.

John enlisted in the Army at Indianapolis, IN on 25 November 1942 and was assigned to I Company, 608th PIR.

Folowig the jump into Normandy Pvt Likky was listed as missing in action as of 8 June 1944,  but his status was later changed to wounded in action on 12 June 1944.  He subsequently  recovered and returned to his company.

In late September 1944 Lilly, now a sergeant, was again wounded in action and did not turn to duty until 2 November when he was assigned to Service Company to continue his recuperation

Due to a subsequent hospitalization he was unable to return to I Company until 12 March 1945,

His military decoration include the Purple Heart with an OLC and the Bronze Service Arrowhead device awarded for participation in the Normandy assault.
