ROBERT L. LINDORFF
GALESBURG - Robert L. Lindorff, Major Ret., U.S. Army, 84, Galesburg, died at 1:57 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg [IL}.

He was born Aug. 29, 1925, in Atlanta, the son of Charles Ole and Edith Walberg Lindorff. He married Patricia K. Lanning on Sept. 10, 1951, at Ft. Campbell, Ky. She preceded him in death June 17, 2006.

He is survived by four daughters, Kathryn (and Robert) Hubbard of Batavia, Joy (and James) Utts of Lake Forest, Lois L. Lindorff of Galesburg and Robin McGee of Quincy; six grandchildren, Sara (and Frank) Hattrem, Emily Hubbard, Elizabeth Hubbard, Jim Utts, Katie Utts and Patrick McGee; two great-grandchildren, Carter Robert Hattrem and Lily Kathryn Hattrem; and a sister, Shirley Keith of Rockford. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.

He served in the United States Army for 20 years, receiving a Battlefield Promotion to 2nd lieutenant during the Korean War. He also served during World War II with the 82nd and 11th Airborne Divisions. He was a master parachutist and received the Pathfinder and Glider Badges in addition to many campaign ribbons with battle stars. He received the Bronze Star with Valor for valor. He retired in 1963 with the rank of major. Bob went on to work as director of production for Heath Candies for six years and then for Butterfinger and Baby Ruth Candies for four years. He then was Extruding Department manager for Baxter Company in Mundelein for seven years. He retired in 1987 and moved to Galesburg.

Bob was raised in Chicago, graduating from Amundsen High School in 1943. He received his bachelor's degree from National College of Education in Evanston in 1975.

Bob was a member of the Galesburg Noon Lions Club, was awarded Lion of the Year, was a Melvin Jones Fellow and was a Lions of Illinois Foundation Fellow. He was also a member of Galesburg Elks Lodge 894 and Moose Lodge 880. He was a member of Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285 in Galesburg and Knoxville (Ill.) American Legion, a life member and past commander of VFW 2257 in Galesburg and past commander of VFW in Lake Villa, Ill. Bob was a life member and Seam Squirrel of the Military Order of the Cooties in Galesburg and Chief of Staff of the Cooties for the State of Illinois. He was co-founding life member of the 187th Airborne Infantry and the 504th and 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment. He was a life member of the 11th Airborne Division Association.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Galesburg

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 6, in First United Methodist Church. Rev. Marilyn Anell will officiate. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 5, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel, with military rites at 8 p.m. by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Fort Sheridan Post Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded. Memorials may be made to Galesburg Noon Lions Club.

Grave marker for Robert L. Lindorff in Section, 15 Row C, Site 244, Fort Sheridan Cemetery Highwood (Lake county), Illinois.

 

Robert enlisted in the Army on 22 July 1943 and sreve3d until he was discharged on 18 may 1951,.  He was commissioned ad a 2nd Lt the following day.

He was promoted to 1st Lt on 20 September 1952 and to Captain on 19 November 1956.

Major Lindorff retired on 1 August 1963.after 20 ears of service.
