Mr. Robert F Longe, 85

   Mr. Robert F. Longe, 85, beloved husband of Sara F. Strickland Longe, of Old Sudlow Lake Road, entered in rest on Thursday, March 9, 2006.
   Graveside services will be held today at 1:00 p.m. at Pineview Memorial Park with military honors. The Rev. Jim Longe will officiate.
   Memorials may be made to the Children's Learning Center, c/o First Baptist Church of North Augusta, 602 Georgia Avenue, North Augusta, SC 29841.

   NORTH AUGUSTA — Robert Franklin Longe, 85, beloved husband of Sara F. Strickland Longe, of Old Sudlow Lake Road, died Thursday (March 9, 2006). A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, at Pineview Memorial Park with military honors. The Rev. Jim Longe will officiate. Pallbearers will be Patrick Longe, Michael Longe, Bob Longe, Jon Duffey, Don Wise and Robby Britt.
   The family will receive friends at Rowland Funeral Home this evening from 6 to 8 p.m.
   He was a native of Douglas and had lived in Waycross, before moving to North Augusta 10 years ago. He was a retired railroad engineer with Seaboard Coast Line Railroad and was a member of Glad Tidings Holiness Church in Waycross.
   He was a World War II, U.S. Army Veteran and was the recipient of the Purple Heart Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Distinguished Unit Badge, American Defense Service Medal and the EAMET Service Medal.
   His family will always remember him as being a loving husband, father and grandfather and great-grandfather.
   Additional survivors include two sons, Robert Leon Longe (wife Linda) of North Augusta, James Franklin Longe, and his wife Sharon of Huntsville, Ala.; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
   Memorials may be made to the Children's Learning Center, in care of First Baptist Church of North Augusta, 602 Georgia Ave., North Augusta, S.C. 29841. Rowland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He was inducted into the Army at Fort Benning, GA on 25 September 1940

 

Robert had enlisted mere days before the the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940 was enacted.  His record was created post-war in Ware county, GA and reflects the date of his honorable discharge dale as 4 September 1945 but other, perhaps more official records show it as 30 August 1945.  The difference may reflect his travel time from the separation center..

Robert was inducted into the army at Fort Benning, GA on 25 September 1940.

While home on furlough he married Sara Francine Strickland in Waycross, Ware, Georgia on 4 April 1942.

On 11 March 1944 Cpl :Longe was admitted to the 9th Field Hospital in Kilrae, North Ireland. On 5 June 1944 he was transferred to the hospital's detachment of patients.

Cpl Longe was transferred from  the 10th Replacement Depot to Hq 3rd on 24 June 1944.

He was wounded in action on 18 September 1944 when he was struck in the chin by artillery shell fragments.  He returned to duty later that month.

Robert was promoted to Sgt on 1 October 1944.

On 20 January 1945, Sgt Longed was wounded in the leg by artillery shell fragments.  He was released to duty on 9 March 1945.

His military decorations include the Purple Heart with 1 OLC and the Bronze Service Arrowhead device awarded for the Holland campaign and Airborne operations
