Robert L. Lunghofer enlisted in the Army on November 9,
1942 in Altoona, PA which appears to have been his home town.
He volunteered for parachutist duty and after completion of basic
training and jump school he was transferred to the 509th Parachute
Infantry Regiment (PIR).
By April, 1944 Robert had been in combat and was awarded the coveted
Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB). He also earned the Bronze Service
Arrowhead device for his participation in the Southern France Campaign
and Airborne Operations there.
He was transferred to Company F of the 508th PIR when the 509th was
disbanded.
After the war, beginning in May 1945, the 508th PIR served as General
Eisenhower's Honor Guard at SHAEF Headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany.
Gradually, those men who had earned sufficient points based on service
time, medals earned, etc. were rotated back to the U.S. The fact that
Robert was home and discharged by July 5, 1945 implies he had a very
high points score.
