Grave markers for William L. Lyles and spouse in Section 43 Site 2729 of Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington (Arlington county), Virginia.

 

William registered for the draft in Washington, DC on 17 October 1942.

Pvt Lyles, a member of Company F, was declared to be a qualified parachutist on 5 March 1943.

On 11 March 1943, Pvt Lyles was sent on detached duty to attend a demolition school held at Fort Benning, GA and returned to duty on 31 March and was promoted to Pfc at about the same time..

Hw was then promoted to Cpl on 18 August 1943.

Cpl Lyles jumped into Normandy on D-Day and was seriously wounded on 13 June 1944.  He was evacuated to a field hospital and on 27 September 1944 was transferred to the hospital's detachment of patients.  He did not return to the regiment.

 

In fact, on 9 September 1944, Cpl Lyles (page 2) was amongst a group from the 117th US Army General Hospital, Bristol England aboard the Queen Mary sailing under Evacuation Orders No. 9. The ship docked in New York City harbor on 17 September 1944.

He was discharged on 10 April 1946.
