EARL G. MARTZ

Pennsylvania Record of Burial Place of Veteran and grave marker for Earl G. Martz in Veterans Section, Site 511 (bottom), Westmoreland County Memorial Park, Greensburg (Westmoreland county), Pennsylvania.

Earl registered for the draft ca. 1941 and was inducted into the Army on 13 January 1943.

Service Company Morning Reports for 1943 are largely unavailable so the date of Earl's arrival in the 508th is unknown.

However on 7 August 1943 it was noted that the status of Pvt Martz was changed from being on Special duty with Clemson College, Clemson, SC to being transferred to the college permanently.

The transfer was probably part of the ASTP (Army Specialized Training Program) which was instituted to meet wartime demands both for junior officers and soldiers with technical skills.

The fact that he was transferred eventually to the 1008th Engineer Service Battalion would seem to bear that out.

This Pennsylvania WWII Veterans Bonus application was submitted by Earl on 18 January 1950.  It shows that he spent 16 months overseas beginning on 15 November 1944.  That period combined with 22 months of domestic service earned him a $460 bonus award.
