Grave marker for Joseph R. McCann in Plot: F, 520 of the
Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, Riverside County, California;
Joseph enlisted in the Army at Fort Devens, Massachusetts on
July 1, 1942 and may have immediately volunteered for parachutist duty.
He excelled in this new role and three years late SSgt McCann was
transferred into Company B and then Company A of the 508th.
Joseph was wounded in action twice during the Holland
Campaign and received the Purple Heart with one Oak Leaf Cluster as a
consequence.
He transitioned from the Army to the Air Force after it
was split off as a separate branch of service in September, 1947. He
retired as a Master Sergeant. |
