Thomas enlisted in the Army at Wilkes Barre, PA on 15 October 1942. 

Initially assigned to Service Co, 508th PIR, Pfc McGowan wds transferred to Company G on 14 July 1944 and a month later moved to Hq 3rd.

His mili9tary decorations include the Bronze Service Arrowhead device awarded for the Holland campaign and Airborne operations.

He was discharged at the Indiantown Gap Military Reservation, PA on 20 December 1945.
