Richard enlisted in the Army at New Cumberland, PA on 12 November1943.

Pfc Meckly was initially assigned to the 507th PIR, Company B and may have taken part in Operation Varsity.  He was transferred to the 508th in Frankfurt, Germany during the latter half of 1945.

He was discharged at Fort Dix, NJ on 3 May 1946.
