Death certificate, burial record and
grave marker for Jesse L. Menchaca in Row 17, Grave 617 of the Fort
Bragg Main Post Cemetery, Fort Bragg (Cumberland county), North Carolina.
Jesse enlisted in the Army at
Shelbyville, IN ca. 1942 and was transferred from the 82nd Airborne HQ
to Service Company, 508th PIR on 3 October 1944.
Pvt Menchaca was promoted to Pfc on 4 January 1945 and
was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge for action during campaign, 18
Dec 1944 to 20 Feb 1945. He
re-enlisted on 10 November 1945 and was later transferred to
Company A, 187th Regimental Combat Team.
The 187th was deployed to Japan, arriving on 20 September
1950. One month later, on 20 October 1950, the regiment made successful combat parachute assaults near the towns of Sukchon and Sunchon, North Korea as part of the Battle of Yongju.
It was on this date that SFC Menchaca was listed as being severely
wounded in Sunch'ŏn (South Pyongan), North Korea.
It would seem that after having being treated within the
Far East, probably in Japan, he was transferred to Fort Bragg for
further treatment and was admitted on 8 December 1950. However he
succumbed on 6 January 1951 |
