Grave marker for Patricio C. Mendez in Plot B 89-1 of Union
Cemetery, Bakersfield (Kern county), California.
Patricio enlisted in the Army at Los Angeles, CA on 25
September 1942 and was assigned to Company B, 508th PIR.
Pvt Mendez participated in the Normandy invasion and
went through the 33 days of combat unscathed.
Making his second combat jump for Operation Market
Garden, however, brought different results. On September 19, Pvt
Mendez was captured and became a prisoner of war. He was liberated
from Stalahg 2B on 23 July 1945.
Pvt Mendez' military decorations include the Combat
Infantryman Badge awarded for action during Normandy, France Campaign, 6
June 1944 to 9 July 1944. |
