EARL S. MICKELSON

Back in the USA

Earl Mickelson (line 36) was one of many POWs returning from the ETO under Movement Orders RO Group, E 1026-16 when the SS Monticello arrived in New York, NY harbor on 3 June 1945.

Whether he chose to remain in the service or was recalled for the Korean Conflict, Earl was in combat there with the Second Infantry Division.  Less than three months after the war began, he was "seriously wounded in action by missile".  [The term missile probably referred to rocket or mortar fire.]  He was "separated for disability" on 30 November 1950.

 

Earl Mickelson, of Centennial, Colorado passed away on September 18, 2013.

There will be a Memorial Service on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at 12:30 pm at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 3101 South Wadsworth Boulevard, Lakewood, Colorado 80227 with interment at Fort Logan before the service.

Our beloved Earl, age 88 was received into God's care. Survived by his loving wife Alice and her daughters Darla (Brian) and Michelle, grateful sons Todd (Debbie) and Terry (Jodee); along with brothers Warren and Luverne.  PaPa to Erik (Ali), Kyle, Cole, Jess, Matt and Garrett.  Preceded in death by wife Joanne, son Jeff, brother Emil, sisters Imogene and Gladys.

Earl was born in Albert Lea, MN to Joseph and Marie. He served in the Army's 82nd Airborne in World War II and was a POW at age 19. He was a postwar peacekeeper in Trieste, Italy, followed by service in the Korean War. Earl was awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

He graduated from Denver University and had a career in accounting. His passions were golfing, skiing, fishing, Hawaii, University of Colorado football but most of all his family.

Interment is October 1 at Fort Logan National Cemetery Area "C" at 11:15 AM followed by a Memorial Service at Horan & McConaty, 3101 S. Wadsworth Blvd. at 12:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in the memory of Earl Mickelson to Colorado State Veterans Home at Fitzsimmons, 1919 Quentin Street, Aurora, CO 80045.
